Supercars Australia championship series finale gets underway in here today.

Newcastle second-largest city will be home to the event for the next five years, and is the 32nd venue to host a round of the championship.

There will be two critical practice sessions on the street circuit today, ahead of a busy weekend of racing.

There will be a qualifying session on Saturday, as well as the inaugural 250 kilometre race.

On Sunday there will be a qualifying session, a Top 10 Shootout, and a 250 kilometre race to finish off the 2017 season.
